Shibuya, Duval Street and the cameras worth opening on Halloween night

· all posts

At 10:18 on Sunday morning in Tokyo the camera above Koen Dori had shoppers coming up the hill past the Nike store and the grey flank of Shibuya MODI, a row of scooters nosed into the kerb, and the crossing at the bottom of the frame filling and emptying on its cycle. The page put the street at 25C and partly cloudy. Six days from now the same stretch of pavement carries Halloween night, and it is one of four Shibuya cameras on the site.

Of the nine results this search returned on 2026-10-25, not one was a camera pointed at something happening this week. There is a press release for a set of haunted-location cameras from two decades ago, a homeowner who wired his decorations to a webcam, a zoo feed with a pumpkin graphic on the page. All dead or beside the point. So here are the ones writing frames tonight, what each actually points at, and the local hour worth opening it.

The four Shibuya cameras and what each points at

Halloween in Shibuya is a street event that nobody organises. People in costume converge on a road junction because everyone else is going to, and the four cameras below cover the ward from three street angles and one rooftop.

Timing is the whole thing here. Sunset in Shibuya on 2026-10-31 is 16:47 and sunrise is 06:01, so the street is dark from late afternoon. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. The crowd thickens from about 18:00 local, which is 09:00 UTC, and it is still going at midnight. If you are in Europe that is a civilised afternoon, and in New York it is breakfast.

Duval Street on the last night of Fantasy Fest

The Duval Street camera is run by Seek Florida Keys and looks down the street past the old Strand frontage, close enough to read the pedicab adverts. When I opened it at 21:18 local last night it had been handed over to the Fantasy Fest parade feed, with the festival's own 2026 artwork burnt into the corner of the frame. The page carried 26C, partly cloudy, and a sunset of 18:52.

Fantasy Fest 2026 runs Oct. 16-25 under the slogan "Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals", so tonight is its last. That matters for anyone finding this later in the week: the costumes on Duval between now and the 31st are two different crowds, the festival one and the Halloween one, and the camera does not distinguish. Sunset in Key West on the 31st is 18:47. The street is worth opening from about 21:00 local, which is 01:00 UTC on 1 November.

Times Square, the Hudson, and how close you get to Salem

At 21:15 last night the Times Square South camera was looking straight down on a stage, a wall of barriers and a crowd that filled the frame corner to corner, under a banner reading Diwali at Times Square. It is a 4K feed and it holds detail at night, which is rare. I am including it because it shows what this camera does with a packed square after dark. Times Square is not where the city's Halloween parade goes, so take it as the crowd shot rather than the event.

North of the city the Hudson River camera at Sleepy Hollow writes a new frame every 60 seconds and switches to infrared after dark. Last night's frame was the far bank strung with lights, flat water, and the tops of the trees in the foreground going silver. It points at the river rather than the village, so it is atmosphere rather than news, and on the right night it is the better picture of the two. Sunset there on the 31st is 17:52.

Salem is the gap. A radius search around the town centre today returned no public camera inside Salem itself; the nearest live ones are three in Beverly 2.7 km out and a Marblehead oceanfront camera at 4.3 km. The Marblehead lens had rain all over it when I pulled a frame at 01:15 UTC, which is its own kind of seasonal.

What I will check on the 31st

I will open these six again on the morning of the 31st and correct this post if any of them has moved, gone private or started showing a holding card. That is a real risk with the ones embedded from video platforms, which is most of the good ones here.

The question I would still like an answer to is whether a decorated street exists on a public camera anywhere. Shibuya is a crowd, Duval is a parade, Sleepy Hollow is a river. A camera pointed at one house on one street that goes all out every October would be better than all of them, and I have not found one yet.
